                                                           DISTRICT PROFILE

                                                                TIRUVALLUR

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

The word "Tiruvallur" is supposedly derived from the Tamil sentence "tiru evvull?" meaning, "Tiru" - Highness (a common prefix in South India for temple towns), "evvull" - where do I sleep. So, Tiruvallur means, a place/town where, the god, Veera Raghavar asked a saint for a place to sleep for a night.

Thiruvallur district is a newly formed district with effect from 1.1.1997. It has a great historical background as it was hitherto a part of the erstwhile Chengalpattu district.
Thiruvallur district has many laurels to its credit owing to its historical connection from 4th Century A.D.  During that period the region was ruled by the Pallava Kings who had Kancheepuram as their capital.  Mahendra Varman and his son Narasimha Varman brought to the Pallava dynasty an eternal name by their artistic bent of mind.  They built many shore temples and other historical institutions.
After the Pallavas the Chola Kings captured the region.  This was in the 10th Century. King Kulothunga Chola named the area Thondamandalam to serve the people as ‘Thondas’ (servers).
During the reign of the Vijayanagar emperor Kirshnadevaraya, the Chengalpet region was added to its empire.  It was in the 14th century.

During the 17th and 18th centuries the Sultans occupied it.  They let the British to collect revenues and in the end the latter became the rulers till 1947.
